The 7 pillars of inclusion are a framework developed by Play by the Rules to help sports clubs and associations address inclusion and diversity .
These 7 pillars work so well for the wine industry and here is how you can think about using them.
The seven pillars are:
1. Access: This pillar is about creating an environment that is physically and mentally accessible to everyone. It involves removing barriers that prevent people from participating. In the wine industry this may be access to a building, vineyard or hospitality area. Access to facilities such at toilets, parking, walkways. Access via language and communication.
2. Attitude: This pillar is about promoting a positive and inclusive attitude towards diversity. It involves challenging negative attitudes and stereotypes, promoting respect for diversity, and creating a culture of inclusion. In the wine industry helping people to find a 'can do' attitude, to have healthy conversations on diversity and need to help people understand better.
3. Choice: This pillar is about providing individuals with the opportunity to choose how they participate. This involves offering a range of options that support and include different interests, abilities, needs, and empowering individuals. This could be offering menus in different sizes, different levels of wine experiences, different roles and lengths of hours in the workplace so different people can access working in wine.
4. Partnerships: This pillar is about building partnerships and collaborations to promote inclusion and diversity. I think this is one of the most inportant for the growing wine industry. Working with groups and individuals who can share experiences, expertise and knowledge helps everyone. Make sure you engage with those who have additional needs for access, they know best how you can help them.
5. Communication: This pillar is about effective communication that is inclusive and accessible to all. It involves using clear and simple language, providing information in different formats, and ensuring that everyone has access to the same information. Communicating what you are doing and then showing it in action, makes it more effective and inviting.
6. Policy: This pillar is about developing policies and procedures that promote inclusion and diversity. It involves reviewing existing policies and procedures, identifying areas for improvement, and implementing changes that promote inclusion and diversity. Whether you are a small company or large, having ideas down and where you want to go with them builds a base.
7. Opportunities: This pillar is about creating opportunities, for me the wine industry can look at where the opportunity and potential to become more inclusive can happen. Do you have wheelchair accessible spaces? Do you have a tour with less people how don't like crowds? Can you make more opportunities? Can you make opportunities to support training in your team for inclusion and diversity?
So why not take the 7 pillars and think how you can use them to improve inclusion and diversity.
